To Resolve or Not

2012 is a few days away. Time to let go of the old and welcome the new. A time for renewal, acceptance, healing, and revealing. Some people will take this opportunity to make new resolutions, whether they are to further extend those made before or declarations of this year I’m really going to do that thing! Not me. I gave up resolving a few years back because it was pretty impossible for me to either break an old habit or start a new one not knowing if I would truly love it. Not to mention the pressure followed by the anxiety then the guilt in which case the bad habit would possible become worse or a new one would develop. Like, if I said I was only going to buy one book a month then went to B&N and bought two, rationalizing I would skip the next month and did, but went earlier the following month and bought five, then waited about a month and a half and when bored, went back up and bought eight. Well, that’s over a year’s worth and Spring hadn’t even arrived yet and since I was well over the limit, why corral myself back? Now you may say that I need more willpower or discipline and maybe those are the right words but apparently I don’t like them.

So I went to Webster’s and looked for new ones and here they are peppered with my opinions:

Resolution – the act or process of reducing to a simpler form; formal expression of opinion, will, or intent voted by an official body or assembled group; to deal with successfully. Again, way too much pressure.

Plan – a method for achieving an end; an often customary method of doing something; a detailed program. Sort of la-la, whatever, not to be taken too seriously.

Goal – didn’t bother with the definition as the word is overused in my profession and I don’t even want to consider it.

Dream – a strongly desired goal or purpose; a visionary creation of the imagination; to consider as possibility. The best in my opinion – not only does it imply fantasy, but also may mean the impossible, and if and when you achieve it this rush of mastery, of conquering, that which was thought unreachable, puts you on a high for days. If nothing else remember that Cinderella says a dream is a wish the heart makes…

And there it is, a Dream. A Writing Dream for 2012. No pressure, no expectation, just a pendulum-like movement writing a bit each day all days and eventually that writing will be complete and I will have my story.

I like it.
Design – a particular purpose held in view by an individual; a plan or protocol for carrying out or accomplishing something and the process for preparing this; the creative art of executing aesthetic or functional designs. Hmm… a structured, professional manner that implies an end so you know you will actually get there, eventually.

I don't make New Years resolutions any more. When things don't turn out the way I planned I get really depressed, so I just try and take everything as it comes my way and that is challenging enough for me.

Good-Luck with your dream for 2012.
