I Believe

I believe everything happens for a reason, although that reason may not be initially apparent or any of our business. I believe there are spirits among us, some assigned and some just show up, to guide us in the direction we chose for ourselves at one time but have since forgotten.

I believe we are haunted by the untruths, taunts, humiliations, betrayals, dysfunctions, and abuses of our pasts. It is difficult for us to come away from that which was beat into us by uncaring parents, malicious nuns, controlling husbands or demanding families. I believe that only when we break the chains of our past are we truly free to discover ourselves. Until then, we remain its prisoner.

I believe that nothing is impossible. I believe that with self-affirmations you can reprogram yourself and become who you wanted to be back before you became jaded by life.

I believe in the goodness of man and that I wish I had more of it.

I believe that people who have a menagerie of animals must be somewhat crazy but I wish I could be a little crazy. I wish I could pick up a cat or a dog and hug it and squeeze it and love it and not feel like it will betray me as have many other things have that I have hugged.

I believe that just because you have a family doesn’t mean they are one.

I believe that food comforts and there are certain times where I will not give up potato chips, candy, or ice cream. I will not deprive myself of everything.

I believe that words can destroy your soul. I believe that saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me,” although I recited it at least one hundred million times, is a crock of shit.

I believe doing one small thing for one unknown person, matters.

I believe that when I am feeling down and the presence of the elderly lady in line in at the checkout at Barnes & Noble, who compliments me on my necklace and I in-turn compliment her exquisite shawl, and we strike up a conversation as though she has as limited human company as I do, and we continue our conversation well into the parking lot while her niece wheels her along, has been planned.

I believe that you should pay attention to signs whether you want to or not.

I believe in the spiritual world, in a higher presence, in a God, and further believe that organized, categorized religion is an attempt for each to think one is better than the other. Why? There is only one heaven.

I believe I don’t always follow directions properly.

I believe that with age, women become emotionally stronger and men, weaker.

I believe in evil and its influence and of venomous beings among us and have been bitten more than once by these creatures and am more on guard than I would like to be.

I believe that some people are weak and excuse their bad behavior because they are lazy and it is easier to thwart blame or attack than to make a conscious effort to change.

I believe if my parents had chosen to be stronger their children would have been also.

I believe most of us do not know how to define love.

I believe in the adage, “Patient, heal thyself.” I do not believe in therapy. Why would a person, after putting up with an abusive situation for years and finally coming to terms with it, seek out a therapist who is privy to only that you choose to reveal, to resurrect the buried pain and anger, only to tell you how you should deal with that which you thought you already had?

I believe if marijuana was acceptable there may be a lot less rage, alcoholism, pill dependency, unhappy relationships, and car accidents, and a lot more laughter and peace.

I believe you should not go back to that which you have left in your life.

I believe the words “never” and “always” have no significance.

I believe having children saved my life.

I believe in the oddness of things.

I believe we need to belong but not necessarily be together.

I believe we have the power to heal ourselves and the power to destroy that which we have healed.

I believe that people are not meant to be together for life.

I believe that you will never really know any one person as well as you would like, as most people will not reveal the truth of who they really are.

I believe there is a thin line between love and hate.

I believe the word “constant” is unnecessary.

I believe that you should make a list of what you believe and read it and add to it frequently, because it will remind you of the you worth knowing.
